If you have never thought about working with young people, or you think you have nothing to offer as a volunteer youth worker, maybe it is time for a rethink.
It’s not just about playing table tennis or pool. Ways of engaging with young people are many and varied and the roles we have available include one-to-one work, support with mental health and well-being, group work, outdoor activities, educational support, and yes, the odd game of ping-pong.
Young people present endless opportunities for you to share your life experience, but they can also teach you a thing or two. And you are never too old to learn. Youth work is for people of all ages and backgrounds, and young people are the least judgemental people you are likely to meet.
So what makes a good youth worker? If you are sincere, open-minded and objective, slow to judge and positive in your outlook, you have most the qualities or characteristics that great youth workers portray. If you think this is you, then why not give it a go as a volunteer.
